Name: Dutch Velders
Canon: The Strain
Canon Point: Post Season Two
Age: 28
History: http://the-strain.wikia.com/wiki/Dutch_Velders
Personality: On the surface, Dutch projects the image of a badass. The first time you really see her after the conflict at the gas station, she is in the bread truck with Vasiliy Fet. Trying to make conversation, he asks her what her story is. She puts on a tough expression and says “My story, what you see is what you get.” even though there is much more to her than that. She’s unwilling to let the other survivors in right away. She doesn’t trust them at first.
Under the surface, Dutch is considerably more vulnerable. In some ways she is a victim. She was very close to her biological father and had to deal with losing him at the young age of twelve. More than that, she had to deal with his immediate replacement. Her mother remarried possibly sooner than she should have to a man she probably shouldn’t have let into her home as it is alluded to that he sexually abused Dutch. In spite of her vulnerability, Dutch tries not to let herself be a victim for long. She always acts to preserve herself. As a child, she moved away from home as soon as she could. As an adult, she aligned herself with a group of survivors to ensure her own safety. It’s a pattern that repeats.
Though she often acts to ensure her own safety, that’s not to say that she doesn’t go out on a limb for others. On the show she’s been known to put herself in harm’s way to kill vampires and save other survivors. In one particular episode, Dutch is settled into a safe apartment building with her girlfriend Nikki. It’s been fortified against Strigoi, but outside Strigoi are invading the neighborhood and feeding on the less fortunate. Dutch chooses to leave her safe haven to fight off the vampires and save lives. When confronted by her girlfriend, she simply responds that she’s thinking of other people.
Dutch loves very intensely. When she falls for someone, even in a platonic sense, she will do anything to protect them. She doesn’t always exactly know how to show that she loves someone, but she feels very deeply nonetheless. She’s admitted on the show that she specializes in passionate and destructive relationships and that becomes apparent later on in the second season of the show when she is split between two individuals she loves very deeply.
On the negative side, Dutch has a little growing up to do especially when it comes to love. She isn’t the most mature woman around. She rushes into things head first. When her lover Vasiliy Fet is brought in by the police, Dutch is ready to go in yelling and screaming until they release him. Luckily, her more levelheaded friend Nora is there to guide her. Dutch is also unable to choose between the two people she loves when it’s clear being with both of them hurts the two of them deeply.
There is a distinct difference in Dutch after the outbreak begins. The first time we see her she is being ushered into Eldritch Palmer’s office being asked very cryptically to shut down the internet and emergency services with her amazing hacking skills. She agrees for the right price, of course, as a jaded hacker desperate for cash might. A few episodes later when she’s trapped inside a gas station’s convenience store it dawns on her what she’s done. She’s enabled Eldritch Palmer to create an all out vampire apocalypse and there is definitely blood on her hands. She feels guilty. It’s clear that it is part of what is distressing her and not just the fear of imminent death. It’s not in that convenience store that she decides to turn over a new leaf, though. Instead, it’s later on. After the group of survivors she meets turn their backs on her when they realize she is to blame for the communications blackout, that’s when Dutch decides to try and fix what she’s done. That’s when she decided to become one of the so-called ‘good guys’. She uses her ingenuity to create a plan to hack the emergency broadcast system to get the word out about what could kill the vampires plaguing the city to give the surviving humans an upper hand. It’s then that she’s accepted by the other survivors and, perhaps, by herself.
Abilities/Skills: Dutch has gotten to be above average at fighting off combatant enemies, especially when using her sword. She’s not bad with her gun, either. Her true expertise is with her computer, though. She’s completed NSA level hacks on the show. Her side-passion is art. On the show when she’s not fighting vampires or fortifying the base of operations she can sometimes be found doing something artistic and past artistic projects have been mentioned in conversation. Dutch’s friend and lover Vasiliy Fet has also done a good job of teaching her basic welding and how to fortify doors and windows against intruders.
Strengths/Weaknesses: Dutch is a very technology oriented person, but she also has an artistic mind. She’s very nimble and good on her feet. Dutch learns very quickly.
One of Dutch’s biggest weaknesses is her thirst for alcohol. There’s not a day that goes by that she doesn’t have at least sip of alcohol. Her second biggest weakness is sex. On the show she is somewhat prone to having sex in inappropriate locations. The biggest weakness of all, however, is probably her reluctance to follow instruction from someone she doesn’t respect.
Items: One pair of black leather lace up boots, distressed jeans, black underwear, black bra, purple sweater, long black coat, silver sword, silver nose stud
SAMPLES
Network Sample: I never really imagined myself in space, but to be fair I never really imagined myself fighting vampires either. Life works in mysterious ways, I guess. Anyway, might as well make some friends while I’m here. I’m Dutch, 28. I’m a New Yorker, but I spent a fair amount of time in London, as well, so I’ve got the best of both worlds. I'm kicking back in the galley right now. Really can't complain about this place. The beer is fantastic. I don’t suppose anyone’s got a deck of cards on them? Maybe we could get a game of something going. What does one play in outer space?
Prose/Action Sample: [All of Dutch’s wandering has led her to the mess. It’s a good thing, too, because, as most times, she’s craving a drink. The place is spacious and welcoming enough, so when she walks in she gets a good feeling about the place. That good feeling only increases when she catches sight of the partially stocked bar.]
Yesss.
[She hisses quietly to herself with a big, mischievous smile on her face. When it comes to alcohol, Dutch isn’t a hard one to please. She grabs the first beer she spots and twists the cap off, taking a long drink. Maybe space exploration won’t be so terrible.
Dutch takes a seat at one of the wooden tables, kicking her feet up on one of the other chairs. It’s a comfortable enough arrangement. The beer, while not her usual brand, is also nice enough - chilled and fizzy, everything beer should be, in her opinion. Her eyes roam the mess, looking at her fellow space explorers. Her mother always stressed the importance of forming relationships. At the time Dutch had been an ugly duckling and her mother had worried that her daughter would never be able to skate by on looks alone, but if she could cultivate relationships then surely life would be easier. Perhaps Dutch could cultivate one such relationship in this place. Friends were never too hard for her to find. They always popped up in the unlikeliest of places. She certainly hadn’t been expecting to make friends that night at the gas station when her life had nearly been snuffed out by a gang of vampires. No, she’d found friendship with her unlikely gang of survivors. They were the most loyal, wonderful people she’d ever met. She imagined she’d be missing all of them pretty fiercely, now. Even the old man, Setrakian, with his tendency to shoot glares at missteps and mistakes. Dutch would miss all of them.]
