How do you feel about baseball?

Are you kidding? It's probably the best way to spend an afternoon if you've got a group of friends at the stadium with you.

[ He'd only managed to go a handful of times before Bucky had gotten shipped off, and then, after he'd followed him, the idea of it had sort of drifted from his mind unless some of the other soldiers had decided to take it up in their downtime. But her response makes him smile. ]

Listened to a lot of games on the radio more than I saw 'em when I was younger, but I think you're right. Too bad there's no stadium in space.

My dad got me started on baseball just like he got me started with computers. When we weren't working on hardware we were playing catch. He took me to see a few Dodgers games before he died.

I guess it was the thing to do growing up. [ The Great Depression and then the War weren't exactly great for pastime activities. ] You know... still not too sure how I feel about the fact they moved to Los Angeles.

My dad didn't like it either, but it meant I got to see California so I was pretty happy about it.

[Too bad he can't see her grin as she remembers seeing the west coast with her dad.]

Of course, I was a little too young to understand neighborhood pride and all that.

[ Remembering everything about not having remembered her and meeting her when he'd been smaller makes things a little more complicated, but he feels he owes her an explanation. Somehow. ]

Hey, uh... [ Way to make it awkward. ] Did you wanna meet somewhere? There's something I wanted to talk to you about.

[ Ooh. Now she can't help but be curious what he wants to talk about. Like just about every other social situation, Dutch takes to this with ease. ] Certainly! Where do you propose we meet? My quarters can be a bit crowded most of the time due to my roommates, but there are moments when they offer privacy.

[ She pauses, realizing that, perhaps, Steve might not want to be alone in a lady's bedroom with her after meeting her just one time. ] Or somewhere more public. That works as well.

[ He's met so many people in their barracks now that it honestly doesn't seem to bother him too much anymore. ]

I can meet you there. Where are you?

[ She pauses. ] Um. Give me a minute to tidy up a bit?

[ She lets out a quiet, nervous chuckle. Dutch isn't the neatest person on the ship. ]

Yeah, sure. [ He sounds a little amused as he answers. ] Just let me know. I'm on Mero, so it shouldn't take too long to get there.

Perfect! [ There's the sudden sound of Dutch rising from her seat, and then the rearranging of things. She's cleaning like there's no tomorrow. This place will shine. ]

[ About fifteen minutes later, she returns. ] Alright. Spotless and ready for a visit. Drop by whenever you're ready.

[ Jesse hasn't heard from Dutch since she'd come across him getting high in the hallway, with her red blazing eyes and her blood-soaked fangs. He's worried. More than worried. He's typed a few messages, all of which he's deleted. He almost called her, too - but what if she doesn't answer? So, he sends a single tentative message, hoping like hell that she'll answer. ]

Dutch?

Jesse. Hey.

[ What do you say to someone you considered killing? Awk-ward. Still, he was so nice to her during the whole ordeal she figures she owes him effort. ]

What's up?

[ Jesse is sitting on the edge of his bed, jiggling his leg with anxious energy and smoking a cigarette, when his MID pings with a new incoming message. With ash crumbling off the end of his smoke, he fumbles quickly with his MID, hoping like hell that it's Dutch. And when he sees it is a response from her, relief floods through him.

Straight away, he switches the feed to video. The urgency with which he does that makes the video camera image of him jerky at first. His eyes are wide, relief written all over his face. ]

Dutch. Jesus, you're okay.

[ She is okay. Her skin is back to its ordinary sun kissed hue and her eyes are a misty blue, not deep blood red. When she smiles her lips peel back to reveal ordinary teeth, not sharp fangs. It's as much of a relief to her as it must be to him. ]

So I am.

[ Her smile falters and then fades altogether. ]

Leaves me feeling a bit foolish for asking you to kill me, you know? It's just that that's the way we handle that sort of thing back home...

[ She sighs. Saying that doesn't make anything any better. Dutch just hopes she didn't make him any more nervous than he already was. ]

[ God, he's glad. He's so glad to see she's okay. So glad to see she looks like Dutch. He starts to smile back at her; the smile fades in its tracks when she brings up asking him to kill her. He doesn't want to be reminded of it. What if he had killed her? What if he'd had to kill her? The very thought still makes him feel sick to his stomach. ]

Look, it's-it's okay. What matters is you're okay. Okay?

[ She nods. It makes her feel a little bit better. A little bit. ]

How about you? You alright?

[ Dutch hasn't forgotten, after all, that when she was in a shitty place she'd found him in a shitty place as well. ]
