Canon Character Information
Appearance: Dutch stands 5’10” tall. She is of slender build. She has naturally blonde hair with dyed black streaks running through it. She has a dreamcatcher tattoo on the inside of her right forearm and a cross tattoo on the center of her back. She often wears dark, smoky eye makeup.
History: http://the-strain.wikia.com/wiki/Dutch_Velders
Personality: On the surface, Dutch projects the image of a badass. The first time you really see her after the conflict at the gas station, she is in the bread truck with Vasiliy Fet. Trying to make conversation, he asks her what her story is. She puts on a tough expression and says “My story, what you see is what you get.” even though there is much more to her than that. She’s unwilling to let the other survivors in right away. She doesn’t trust them at first.
Under the surface, Dutch is considerably more vulnerable. In some ways she is a victim. She was very close to her biological father and had to deal with losing him at the young age of twelve. More than that, she had to deal with his immediate replacement. Her mother remarried possibly sooner than she should have to a man she probably shouldn’t have let into her home as it is alluded to that he sexually abused Dutch. In spite of her vulnerability, Dutch tries not to let herself be a victim for long. She always acts to preserve herself. As a child, she moved away from home as soon as she could. As an adult, she aligned herself with a group of survivors to ensure her own safety. It’s a pattern that repeats.
Though she often acts to ensure her own safety, that’s not to say that she doesn’t go out on a limb for others. On the show she’s been known to put herself in harm’s way to kill vampires and save other survivors. In one particular episode, Dutch is settled into a safe apartment building with her girlfriend Nikki. It’s been fortified against Strigoi, but outside Strigoi are invading the neighborhood and feeding on the less fortunate. Dutch chooses to leave her safe haven to fight off the vampires and save lives. When confronted by her girlfriend, she simply responds that she’s thinking of other people.
Dutch loves very intensely. When she falls for someone, even in a platonic sense, she will do anything to protect them. She doesn’t always exactly know how to show that she loves someone, but she feels very deeply nonetheless. She’s admitted on the show that she specializes in passionate and destructive relationships and that becomes apparent later on in the second season of the show when she is split between two individuals she loves very deeply.
On the negative side, Dutch has a little growing up to do especially when it comes to love. She isn’t the most mature woman around. She rushes into things head first. When her lover Vasiliy Fet is brought in by the police, Dutch is ready to go in yelling and screaming until they release him. Luckily, her more levelheaded friend Nora is there to guide her. Dutch is also unable to choose between the two people she loves when it’s clear being with both of them hurts the two of them deeply.
There is a distinct difference in Dutch after the outbreak begins. The first time we see her she is being ushered into Eldritch Palmer’s office being asked very cryptically to shut down the internet and emergency services with her amazing hacking skills. She agrees for the right price, of course, as a jaded hacker desperate for cash might. A few episodes later when she’s trapped inside a gas station’s convenience store it dawns on her what she’s done. She’s enabled Eldritch Palmer to create an all out vampire apocalypse and there is definitely blood on her hands. She feels guilty. It’s clear that it is part of what is distressing her and not just the fear of imminent death. It’s not in that convenience store that she decides to turn over a new leaf, though. Instead, it’s later on. After the group of survivors she meets turn their backs on her when they realize she is to blame for the communications blackout, that’s when Dutch decides to try and fix what she’s done. That’s when she decided to become one of the so-called ‘good guys’. She uses her ingenuity to create a plan to hack the emergency broadcast system to get the word out about what could kill the vampires plaguing the city to give the surviving humans an upper hand. It’s then that she’s accepted by the other survivors and, perhaps, by herself.
Powers/Abilities/Talents: Dutch is talented with a sword. She is good with a handgun. She’s got a mean right hook. She is an extremely talented hacker. She is artistically inclined.
AU/CR AU Addendum: (If your character is considered AU, please tell us what about them makes them AU and why you decided to make these changes.)
What 4 items would you like your character to have with them on the island during their stay? Her silver sword, her gun, bottle of sleeping pills, bottle of stimulants
Samples - Can be linked
First Person: Traveling from New York to an island paradise by way of a flying ship is something I can honestly say I never imagined would happen. I’m not certain whether I’m happy or upset about this development, really. I’m not certain about anything anymore…
Third Person: (From a PSL)
It had only been months since Dutch had started hunting vampires, but somehow it was starting to feel like her calling in life. A handful of iffy clues had led her to the house in the quiet suburban neighborhood, but judging by the blacked out windows she was looking at Dutch was all but certain she’d found the vampire she’d been looking for. She parked her car about a block away and walked in the daylight, certain her target would be sleeping, to the front door. Crossing her metaphorical fingers, Dutch only hoped that none of the neighbors would snoop or ask questions as to why there was a suspicious woman picking a lock on one of their picturesque houses. Luckily, she managed to get inside.
Her arsenal of weapons was pretty bare compared to what she was used to carrying with her. Dutch only toted her sword and a gun. She figured she would make short work of the Las Vegas vampire. There was only one of him. No need for grenades or other fancy weapons like the ones her mentor back home created in his spare time. Those were meant for nests. She’d behead this one and be on her merry way with another win under her belt.
As Dutch crept through the house, she practically held her breath. Setrakian, the old man who had taught her everything she knew about vampires, would have emphasized that silence was key when walking through a nest of sleeping vampires. Dutch always took his words to heart. Her hand gripped the hilt of her sword tightly, but she kept it low at her side. Her gun was tucked into the back of her jeans. Wherever he was, she was ready for him.
Finally, out of the 4 words, pick one: Chimes, lake, gravel, or sun? Sun
