Name: Dutch Velders Door: Door Pass (submissive) Canon: The Strain (TV) Canon Point: Post-Series Age: 28 Appearance: 5’10”, thin, Caucasian, some kind of symbol tattoo on her back and “luceo non uro” tattooed on her right forearm, long blonde hair History: http://the-strain.wikia.com/wiki/Dutch_Velders Personality: Promiscuous - This is possibly Dutch’s greatest fault and the one that causes her the most suffering. It’s a little like that song, where the narrator falls in love with someone new every day. The part where it becomes a problem is that Dutch sleeps with everyone she falls in love with, leaving a trail of broken hearts in her wake. In the end, she suffers too, as her lovers thus far haven’t been interested in polyamory. One such instance is when she had to choose between Fet and Nikki. Nikki was Dutch’s longterm girlfriend, but ditched Dutch when a group of Strigoi showed up. In effect, she left Dutch to die. With no word from Nikki afterward, Dutch had assumed that Nikki died and moved on to a serious relationship with Fet who seemed to really love her. Nikki came back into the picture and it was time to choose. Dutch cared about both of them, but knowing that they both wanted exclusivity she chose Nikki, who then dumped her. Her promiscuity doesn’t always involve getting into a relationship, either. During the show, it’s becomes clear that Dutch has “connections”. Those connections are needed to make fake ID and the man who makes the ID can be found at a BDSM club where he hung out with Dutch. She even tells Fet that she specializes in passionate, destructive relationships. Morally Grey - Dutch is introduced to the TV series at first as a villain. Being a brilliant hacker, she is hired by main antagonists to shut down the internet in New York City for a period of time and she does it for cash without asking why she’s doing such a thing. Later, she proves her moral greyness when she’s willing to throw someone under the bus, so to speak, to escape the Strigoi breeding facility she is trapped in. Dutch is also willing to kill friends at a second’s notice when they become infected with the Strigoi worm. Her other friends are always searching for a cure, but it seems that she would rather take no risks and just eliminate them instead of holding onto hope. Violent - The vampire apocalypse calls for people to toughen up, and Dutch has little trouble with this. She’s already a violent person, is proficient with a shotgun, and takes very little time learning how to use a sword. Dutch doesn’t seem shaken after killing Strigoi even knowing that they used to be human beings. When it comes to vampires, she’s like a killing machine. It doesn’t end there, though. She is able to kill other human beings. See, the vampire plague spreads very easily. If a worm gets into a wound, you’re doomed to be a vampire. This happened to a friend of hers. He tried to hide it and his other friends tried to find excuses, say that they’d find a cure or something, but Dutch simply cut his head off mid-conversation and left that group of friends Unfaithful - Dutch has proven herself to be unfaithful to her partners not just sexually but also emotionally. Once she has begun a relationship with Fet, she returns to her lover, Nikki. At first she doesn’t sleep with Nikki, merely get close to her as a confidante might. It breaks Fet’s heart and it’s only the sharpness of his pain that causes her to choose between the two of them. Unfortunately for her, even after choosing, it doesn’t work out in her favor. Later in the series, she begins a relationship with Eph only to return to Fet. Eph actually dies in an explosion in Fet’s stead, so, in a weird way, that works out for her. However, after the Night Eternal ends and human society returns to a somewhat normal state, Fet and Dutch’s relationship is very much up in the air because of the way Dutch has acted. Maybe Dutch isn’t really meant for relationships. Brutally Honest & Vulgar - The way Dutch communicates isn’t often pleasant unless she’s trying to seduce you or if you’re a child. She has a tendency to look at life through a cynic’s lens and tell the brutal truth. The language she uses is also usually vulgar with Dutch dropping F-bombs and using other curses. If you’re an enemy, then she is especially harsh with her language. Intelligent - Through looking back at her past, it’s obvious that Dutch was a child prodigy. Her father taught her how to phish and hack and took her to hacking conventions. When her father died, her passion for technology only intensified. Dutch learned how to build and tinker with almost anything and her skill with code was impeccable. By the time present day in the show rolls around, Dutch has built up a reputation as the best hacker on the east cost of the United States. Strong - Dutch has been through a lot and hasn’t broken down. She’s nearly been killed several times, which isn’t remarkable considering her world is teeming with lethal vampires, but it’s usually enough to send ordinary human beings like her into a tailspin. Not Dutch. She’s been rejected by the most important person in her life, her girlfriend, twice, and both times manages to find another support system to help her survive in the world, never getting too heartbroken about it. Probably the most amazing display of strength is her capture by lead vampire Thomas Eichorst. He keeps her and tortures her in a private, white room because she reminds him of a woman who once rejected him. He nearly rapes her with his vampire proboscis, but she manages to escape and, after a good cry, puts it behind her. It haunts her, but she functions and even winds up chopping the bastard’s hand off in revenge. During the apocalypse, Dutch falls in love, but the man she loves volunteers to set off a nuclear bomb in the presence of the Master vampire to fix everything. Dutch pitches a brief fit, but eventually comes to terms with everything and very maturely accepts his decision. That, to me, is another instance that screams of her strength. Artistic -Even during what could very well be the end of humanity, Dutch finds ways to express herself artistically. When she isn’t hunting Strigoi, she’s usually working on an art project Powers and Abilities: Dutch is skilled with a handgun and skilled with a sword. She is pretty good at fighting with her fists. She’s an excellent artist.
